Frustrated Texas doctors seeking medical liability insurance fix
Physicians across Texas recently held several events to call attention to skyrocketing medial liability insurances rates, with some rates increasing as much as 300%. In South Texas, hundreds of physicians went on strike to protest the malpractice insurance premiums and verdicts. Physicians in a show of support, planned other simultaneous events throughout the state.
"We stand with our colleagues all across Texas who are, on this Day of Awareness, calling public attention to the very real consequences of unchecked lawsuit abuse, said Texas Medical Association President, Tom Hancher, MD.
According to the TMA's annual study of trends in medical liability claims, indemnity paid per claim is increasing and almost 90% of the claims against doctors are closed with no money paid to the claimant. The data used by TMA was collected from the three largest carriers in Texas.
