Gallup Poll Confirms Americans Support Medical Liability Reforms
A recent Gallup Poll, conducted January 20-23, 2003, confirmed
Americans support medical liability reforms, such as those contained in California's
MICRA. One thousand and six adults were surveyed. Of those surveyed: 41%
have somewhat been following the news about the issue of medical practice; 57% believe
patients bring too many lawsuits against doctors; 56% describe the issue of medical
malpractice insurance a major problem in health care today; 72% favor a limit on the
amount patients can be awarded for their emotional pain and suffering; and 64% favor a
limit on the amount that patients can be awarded as punishment to doctors for negligence
or carelessness.
