As the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers (OATL) continue to run television ads in the Columbus market asserting that Senate Bill 80, the tort reform legislation, “discriminates against women, children, and older Ohioans” and urging viewers to contact the bill’s sponsor Senator Steve Stivers ( R – Columbus ) and “tell him that he represents real people”, word comes of a lawsuit filed last week that seeks to ban the sale of Oreo cookies to children in California. The OATL is continues to say that lawsuit abuse is a nonexistent problem. Proponents of Senate Bill 80 disagree and the Oreo cookie lawsuit is a good example of lawsuit abuse. The attorney who filed the suit claimed that trans fat, an ingredient in Oreos that make them crispy and the filling creamy, is dangerous for children. The attorney voluntarily dismissed the suit days after filing it, claiming that the publicity the lawsuit generated accomplished his goal of making people aware of trans fat.
