West Nile Virus Update
West Nile Virus has now been identified in mosquito pools collected from Garfield Heights, near the border
of Valley View and Maple Heights. This finding represents the first positive mosquito pools identified in the
United States this year.
Since birds and mosquitoes have been identified with the virus, the incidence of human cases occurring
is increased. Appropriate laboratory analysis and prompt reporting of confirmed or suspected cases of
mosquito-borne disease (WNV, La Crosse, St. Louis Encephalitis and Aseptic Meningitis) is important.
Free testing is available at The Ohio Department of Health Laboratory (ODHL) on all hospitalized
patients with viral encephalitis, viral meningo-encephalitis or aseptic meningitis. Calling, 614-387-2775
arranges testing. For more information regarding serological testing The Ohio Department of Health
Laboratory can be reached at 614-644-4659.
