| AMC/NOMA encourages all members—especially those who administer to high-risk patients--to order their influenza vaccine early this year in order to prepare for another potential shortage.
The GAO report on last year’s flu vaccine shortage epidemic and this year’s suggested distribution practices (GAO-01-624), published earlier this month, indicates that there may be distribution problems again this year.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is advising physicians to place flu vaccine orders now. In addition, the CDC is advising those who administer flu vaccines to develop contingency plans in the event that another flu vaccine delay or shortage should occur. The CDC has also updated its recommendations on immunization practices.
AMC/NOMA strongly urges all members who have not yet done so, to order their influenza vaccine now.
There are only three manufacturers to produce nearly 80 million doses of new vaccine this year. One manufacturer is planning to ship orders in two parts this fall, the first meant solely for high-risk patients.
If you have not yet placed your influenza vaccine order, you are encouraged to do so now.
The AMC/NOMA will continue to keep members apprised of all developments in this year’s flu vaccination manufacturing and distribution.
