New Aetna, Inc., contracts are being mailed to physicians across the country. The new contracts reflect the changes that were mandated in Aetna's settlement of lawsuits brought by physicians and state and county medical societies. One of the most notable changes in the contract is the provision which defines "medically necessary care." The contract states that "patients are entitled to medically necessary care as determined by a physician who follows generally accepted medical practice standards." The new contract also has a new definition of what constitutes a "clean claim," which is part of Aetna's agreement to implement changes in its business operations to make the claims process less onerous for physicians. Physicians who think that Aetna is violating the Settlement can file a compliance dispute by submitting a form that is available on the HMO Settlements Web site at www.hmosettlements.com .
