A $24 million computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system should help improve safety and quality of care, cut drug errors and speed up patient care at Akron's Summa Health System. Other system benefits include: integrating orders with patient medical records; allowing physicians to access information online or via a wireless personal digital assistant; allowing nurses access to information on carted wireless computers. The system will first be implemented in Akron City Hospital, where the nursing unit will begin testing the system in June 2005. By the end of 2005, Summa Health System will have the CPOE systems fully operational at Akron City and St. Thomas Hospital. Within five years, CPOE will be installed at Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital. Summa's estimated cost savings is about $14 million over five years. Crain's Cleveland Business reports that the Cleveland Clinic implemented a CPOE at its suburban family health centers and is currently developing a similar system for its hospitals. University Hospital is considering a similar system according to UH spokesperson Eileen Korey.
