AMCNO Annual meeting a success – Dr. Raymond J. Scheetz, Jr., installed as 2008-2009 president

The Academy of Medicine of Cleveland & Northern Ohio (AMCNO) held its Annual Meeting Dinner and Awards Presentation Friday, April 25, honoring area professionals and awarding $40,000 in foundation scholarships to local medical students during the evening’s festivities.

The 2008 list of honorees was led by John A. Bergfeld, MD, who received the John H. Budd MD Distinguished Membership Award for his exemplary contributions to the local medical community. George E. Kikano, MD was honored with the Charles L. Hudson MD Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his longtime dedication to organized medicine. The 2008 Clinician of the Year designation was conferred upon Victor M. Bello, MD, recognizing his superb accomplishments in active practice and research. The Academy’s Outstanding Service Award was presented to John D. Clough, MD, acknowledging his role in AMCNO legislative activities. Dale H. Cowan, MD, JD was honored with the Special Honors Award for his contributions to the AMCNO. And James Mehrling, program director from WCLV, was awarded a Special Recognition Award for his years of expert work on the production of the AMCNO award-winning Healthlines radio program. 

The Academy of Medicine Education Foundation (AMEF) presented eight local medical students with scholarships worth $5,000 each at the meeting. The scholarships were awarded to Shelley Chang, Case Western Reserve University, Jovana Martin, Case Western Reserve University, Elim Shih, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, Jason O. Robertson, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Rachel M. Roth, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Craig Jarrett, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Amir K. Durrani, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, and Aaron D. Viny, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. AMEF enhances the philosophy of the AMCNO in its focus on health-oriented education for physicians, their staff and for patients by providing support for meaningful education and highlighting the value and quality of healthcare in our community.

The final act of the evening was to install Raymond J. Scheetz, Jr., MD., a member of the Department of Rheumatic and Immunologic Disease at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, as president of the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland & Northern Ohio (AMCNO) for the 2008-2009 year.
