H.R. 371 passed in the U.S. House this week effectively regulating decorative plano contact lenses as medical devices. AMC/NOMA member Thomas Steinemann, MD has been instrumental in the bills' passage, and will participate in a press conference with sponsors Sen. Mike DeWine and Rep. John Boozman, on Monday, Oct. 31-A symbolic gesture as a marked increase in use of the lenses occurs at Halloween. Steinemann, who specializes in Cornea and External Eye Disease at MetroHealth and is an Assoc. Professor of Opthalmology at Case, was invited to present his findings from two published case studies at recent congressional hearings on the matter. H.R. 371 was a companion bill to legislation that passed the Senate in July. In a letter on Wednesday, Steinemann acknowledged the work done by the AMC/NOMA in advocating on behalf of both our member and this important legislation. "Thanks to the AMC/NOMA for all your support in this process," he wrote.
