CMS has asked the Office of Management and Budget for emergency clearance of a certification document that would allow provider organizations to conduct bulk enumeration of the national provider identifier. Currently, providers must get an identifier on an individual basis, whereas bulk enumerations would allow organizations to send files requesting identifiers for all physicians and providers. "We cannot reasonably comply with the normal clearance procedures because public harm will ensue from the continued denial of access from providers obtaining national provider identifiers en masse," CMS said in a notice to OMB.
