Consistent findings suggest that between 20 percent and 25 percent of physician practices currently use computer-based patient records (CPR), and 50 percent to 60 percent plan to use them in the near future, according to a report from the California HealthCare Foundation. The greatest barriers to CPRs, however, are a lack of funding and physician resistance, which together highlight the larger problem for adoption-"uncertainty for any organization about the specific benefits they will derive from the large and multi-year investments needed for CPRs," the report found.
