The Workgroup for Electronic Data Exchange has recommended to the Dept. of Health and Human Services that a movement toward standard transactions is coming and "nonstandard formats and content currently in use will not be cost justifiable over time." They have asked for extra time to comply to give providers, payers, and claims clearinghouses the ability to reach HIPAA code. A number of other suggestions included the use of standard acknowledgement and error reports to make payer communications consistent; forming a group to resolve data issues for coordination of benefits transactions; and implementing schedules. WEDI recommended a focus to identify and promote the benefits of HIPAA transactions including "realistic" cost and benefit studies.
