The Food and Drug Administration Wednesday approved a new injectable flu vaccine in an attempt to ensure adequate supply for the upcoming flu season beginning in October. Fluarix, approved for usage on persons 18 years and older, is manufactured by a subsidiary of Glaxo-SmithKline in Germany and has been widely available in other countries for several years. The company expects to supply the United States market this season with 8 million doses at a price comparable to other shots, less than $20 per dose. In light of last years shortages, the FDA granted Glaxo the license under a special fast-track approval system that requires the company to perform follow-up studies verifying the levels of protective antibodies translate into true flu protection.
