Gov. Taft Signs Budget, Vetoes Stem Cell Funding and Medicaid Pilot Program

Governor Bob Taft signed the $51.25 billion, two-year state budget bill in Dayton Thursday morning after exercising his line-item veto authority on 27 provisions. Notable vetoes included the prohibition of Third Frontier funding being used for any research that may engage in the use of embryonic stem cells. Taft cited President Bush's policy on the matter where federal funding is concerned, and said Ohio's law "mirrored" that of the administration. He also vetoed a pilot program for chronically ill children on Medicaid, stating the provision would have severely restricted the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services from effectively managing the care of chronically ill children and from tracking such care management programs.
