HEALTH Act passed by House Judiciary
Committee
On
September 10th the House Judiciary Committee passed the bipartisan Health Act (HR 4600).
The HEALTH Act is modeled after the California Medical Injury
Compensation Act (MICRA), whose provisions allow patients to receive full compensation for
their lost wages and future medical expenses. The MICRA Act also provides a
reasonable limit on noneconomic damages and limits attorney contingency fees. Senate
Bill 281 (Ohio's tort-reform legislation) is also based on the MICRA Act.
The
American Medical Association commends James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), Judiciary Committee
Chair, for his efforts and leadership on this issue. More information concerning the
HEALTH Act may be found on the AMA Web site, www.ama-assn.org
