HHS Calls Up Medical Personnel for Hurricane Katrina Relief; HIPAA, Licensure Reqs Waived

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) this week established both a Web site, www.hhs.gov/katrina/ and a toll-free number, 866.KAT-MEDI to identify health care professionals wishing to aid in relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina. Volunteers will be non-paid temporary federal employees, eligible for coverage under the Federal Tort Claims Act for liability and Workman’s Compensation when functioning as HHS employees. Travel and per diem will be paid. HHS also issued a reminder to medical personnel regarding the sharing of protected patient information under HIPAA regulations in the context of an emergency disaster situation. Louisiana’s governor and Mississippi’s state board of licensure have waived physician licensure requirements as long as the provider has a current valid license in another state. Physicians are asked to bring their medical license, photo ID, DEA license and Rx pads with them to be granted an Emergency Temporary Medical License (MD, DO, DPM) for the pendency of the Governor’s Declaration of Emergency.
