Last week Maryland doctors at Prince George's Hospital Center voted unanimously to ask administrators to allow them to work without med mal insurance coverage, according to the Washington Post. Doctors apart of the hospital's General Medical Staff face 40 percent increases in med mal insurance premiums next year - too costly for them to continue to practice. State lawmakers continue to debate the issue. The Wash. Post reports, last week the state task force appointed by Gov. Robert Ehrlich Jr. (Rep) met for the third time in order to craft recommendations that might ease the situation by Nov. In an attempt to speed resolution, the Gov. has asked the group to revisit failed legislation seeking to reduce payouts to those injured by doctors. According to The Washington Post, if doctors do decide to practice without coverage, the doctors would not be in danger of losing their medical licenses because the state does not require proof of malpractice insurance. Without coverage though, doctors would force hospitals to suspend them or find some alternative to help the doctors get coverage. Willie Blair, a private trauma surgeon who is on call at the hospital and has privileges to work at the hospital said he and other surgeons see about 2,500 patients a year.
