The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced this week that the official handbook for explaining Medicare benefits to beneficiaries contains a substantial error. The 35 million handbooks currently being shipped across the country listed all of the plans available for those with limited assets and income as having no monthly premium. However, only about 40% of the plans actually qualify for no premium. CMS officials cited inadequate proofreading as the reason for the misprint. It turns out that the 14 million low-income people, including as many as 72,000 in Northeast Ohio and possibly 878,000 in Ohio, who are eligible for price breaks with the new prescription drug plans are not allowed to choose the one they like best.
