North Carolina governor expected to sign medical-malpractice legislation

North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley (D) is expected to sign legislation this month that will mark one of the few times the state's legal and medical professions have reached a consensus on medical-malpractice reform. If approved, the legislation would take effect Jan. 1 and will cap monetary damages in medical malpractice cases at $1 million when both sides agree to settle a claim through binding arbitration. The AMCNO is monitoring the status of this legislation and how it could assist the AMCNO is garnering additional support for SB 59 – the mandatory arbitration legislation under review in Ohio.
