A U.S. Census Bureau report released this week reveals that the number of uninsured U.S. residents increased by 2.4 million in 2002, bringing the total to 43.6 million people. The nearly 6 percent jump from 2001 is the second consecutive annual increase.
The AMA proposal for health insurance reform is based on a system of individual tax credits that are refundable, can be received by the government in advance to pay for health insurance, and inversely related to income to purchase health insurance.
