ODI Will Collect Medical Liability Claims Data Online

The Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) on Wednesday launched a Web-based medical liability data collection application, enabling insurers and those who pay medical liability claims on behalf of providers to securely report to ODI their costs of defending claims and paying judgments and settlements. House Bill 215, effective last fall, mandates that admitted and non-admitted insurers, risk retention groups and self-insurers report “closed claim data” to ODI, which has now created the online application to simplify the task of reporting required data. The rule requires that closed claims for each calendar year be reported by May 1 of the following year. The secure application is available on the Department’s site at www.ohioinsurance.gov   under the medical malpractice insurance link. Ohio is now the sixth state to implement procedures to collect med mal closed claims data.
