Ohio KePRO has been awarded a special study by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to develop and establish a comprehensive approach to prevent perioperative complications.
Under the study, Ohio KePRO and the Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality, as a subcontractor, will pool their expertise and resources to develop performance measures and evaluate methods of involving health care workers in reducing the incidence of postoperative mortality and morbidity.
Ohio KePRO also will evaluate two existing data collection instruments used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Veterans Administration (VA), and develop data collection programs and interventions that can be used in the 8th Scope of Work.
The study is an extension of the Surgical Infection Project (SIP) being performed by QIOs under the 7th Scope of Work. While SIP focuses on the use of antibiotics to reduce infection, the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) will also address other postoperative morbidities (pneumonia, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolus and perioperative acute myocardial infarction).
