In the races for President of the United States, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry carried Ohio with close to 618,000 votes in the Democrat Primary for President and President George W. Bush ran unopposed on the Republican ballot and received approximately 735,000 votes. 32.38% of the Ohio electorate turned out to vote in the March 2nd Primary election.
For United States Senator, current U.S. Senator George Voinovich led the Republican ticket with 76.61% of the vote and Ohio Senator Eric Fingerhut won the Democrat nomination with 70.83% of the vote.
Republicans with primaries for the United States Representative races, the following individuals won their primary and will be on the ballot as the Republican candidate in November: Larry Kaczala (District 9), Edward Fizpatrick Herman (District 10), Robert Lucas (District 13), and current Congresswoman Deborah Pryce (District 15).
Democrats with primaries for the United States Representative races, the following individuals won their primary and will be on the ballot as the Democrat candidate in November: Greg Harris (District 1), Charles Sanders (District 2), current Congressman Ted Strickland (District 6), Congressman Dennis Kucinich (District 10), Capri Cafaro (District 14), Mark Brown (District 15), and Brian Thomas (District 18). State Representative Ed Jerse ran on the Democrat ticket in District 14, but lost to Cafaro.
All the members of the Ohio House of Representatives are up for re-election in 2004 and one-half of the Ohio Senators, the Senators in even-numbered districts. In the Ohio Senate, current Republican Senator Bob Spada of North Royalton easily defeated his Republican opponent, winning with over 74% of the vote. State Representative Tim Grendell of Chesterland won his Republican primary over State Representative Jamie Callender of Willowick. Grendell received a little more than 67% of the vote. Grendell ran for term-limited Senator Bob Gardner's Senate seat in the 18th Ohio Senate District.
The hottest primary race was the Republican primary in the 14th Ohio Senate District. This seat is currently held by the Senate President Doug White, who is term-limited. State Representative Tom Neihaus, a Republican from New Richmond, ran against State Representative Jean Schmidt, a Republican from Loveland. According to the Ohio Secretary of State's unofficial results, Schmidt won the 14th District Republican primary by 62 votes.
In the Democrat primary for the Ohio Senate, State Representative Charlie Wilson of St. Clairsville easily defeated former State Representative Jerry Krupinski for the 30th Senate District seat being vacated by term-limited Senator Greg DiDonato. In the Akron area, recently appointed Senator Kimberly Zurz, a Democrat from Green Township, defeated former State Representative Tom Seese of Akron for the Democrat candidate for the 28th Senate District. In the 18th Senate District, John Hawkins will be the Democrat candidate in November.
In the Ohio House races where there was a contested primary, the following individuals will be the Republican candidate in November: State Representative Tim Schaffer (5th District), Beverly Valencic (7th District), Tim Corrigan (15th District), State Representative Jim McGregor (20th District), State Senator Lou Blessing (29th District), State Representative Tom Brinkman (34th District), State Representative Earl Martin (57th District), Randy Pope (61st District), Christopher Galloway ( 62nd District), Joseph Uecker (66th District), State Representative Dave Evans (71st District), State Representative Chris Widener (84th District), Danny Bubp (88th District), former State Representative Ron Hood ( 91st District ), and Matthew Dolan (98th District).
In the Ohio House races, current State Representative Mary Cirelli, a Democrat from Canton, and current State Representative Larry Price, a Democrat from Columbus, lost their primary races. In other House races where there was a Democrat contested primary, the following individuals will be the Democrat candidate in November: Catherine Burner (2nd District), Kenny Yuko ( 7th District), State Representative Claudette Woodard (9th District), T. J. Dow (11th District), recently appointed State Representative Timothy DeGeeter (15th District), David Pomerantz (17th District), Mike Mitchell (26th District), Brian Williams (41st District), William Healy (52nd District), State Representative Joe Koziura (56th District), Deanna Hill ( 57th District), State Representative Sylvester Patton (60th District), State Representative Dan Sferra ( 64th District), William Eby (84th District), and Allan Sayre (96th District).
In the Ohio Supreme Court races, the only primary was for the Democrat who will face Judith Ann Lanzinger for an Ohio Supreme Court Justice seat in November. Although Scott Gwin of Cincinnati was endorsed by the Ohio Democratic Party he lost to Judge Nancy Fuerst of Cleveland in the primary,
