In response to the massive relief and rebuilding efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, several congressional republicans Wednesday suggested federal budget cuts, including saving $30.8 billion by postponing the Medicare prescription drug benefit for one year. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn) said the whole country must sacrifice, not just those personally affected by the hurricane. Other suggested ideas included program cuts from the CDC to Homeland Security, raising taxes, and even a bond program, similar to those that helped fund World War II, was introduced Thursday by the two Louisiana senators in Congress. Referencing the myriad ideas being forwarded to find the money for what has been termed the country's worst natural disaster, House Speaker Dennis Hastert said Wednesday, "Everything is on the table."
