U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health Offers Free CME credits in Cultural Competency

Healthcare disparities in the U.S. are increasing among racial and ethnic groups, and physicians are seeing an increase in the number of patients from different cultural backgrounds. Racial and ethnic disparities in health cannot be fully addressed unless patients and medical professionals achieve improved communication. Therefore, it is important for physicians to be aware of cultural needs which could impact the way patients communicate their medical needs.

The Academy of Medicine of Cleveland & Northern Ohio (AMCNO) has been offered the opportunity to provide our members with a link to educational resources to support the development of health care systems that can assist diverse patient groups. To build cultural competence among health care providers and provide them with the awareness, knowledge and skills needed to treat a diverse patient population, the Office of Minority Health (OMH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has commissioned the development of cultural competency curricula and education modules, which are available at www.thinkculturalhealth.com.

Health care providers can visit the site and register to review cultural competency in health care while earning credit. Physicians may obtain up to nine free CME credits on the site. Physicians can log in from anywhere, at anytime, to complete the courses. CME certificates will be issued immediately upon successful completion of each of the three themes of the course.
