West Nile virus update
Health officials now believe they have captured the first virus-carrying mosquitoes in northeast Ohio. No human cases have been identified as of yet, but recent findings confirm that the virus is established in Cuyahoga County. The Ohio Department of Health reports twelve birds were found in Shaker Heights, five on the East Side of Cleveland, one in South Euclid, one in Cleveland Heights and one in Garfield Heights.
Up-to-date information about the virus, including signs, symptoms, laboratory testing and reporting may be obtained through the Ohio Department of Health at 614-752-1029 (Vector Borne Disease Program) or toll-free at 1-888-411-4142. Dead blue jays or crows should be reported to the local health departments (Cuyahoga County 216-443-5643).
