WHO taps JCAHO to Lead Global Medical Error Reporting Effort

The World Health Organization announced Tuesday that an American group will coordinate an international effort to combat medical errors, which harm one in ten patients each year around the world. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations will lead the initiative through its international consulting and accreditation division. The WHO Collaborating Centre, which will be the world's first facility focused solely on patient safety, will collaborate with ministries of health, patient safety experts and agencies, health care professional associations and consumer organizations to coordinate international efforts on best practices. The Joint Commission International Center for Patient Safety, launched earlier this year by JCAHO, will further the effort by creating partnerships with leaders in developing and developed counties to determine health care safety needs and find corresponding "proven solutions.”
